Honoring Memorial Day: A Time to Remember and Reflect

As we approach Memorial Day, our family is taking time to remember and honor the brave men and women who served and sacrificed for our country. This day holds deep significance as we reflect on the sacrifices made by so many to protect our freedoms and way of life.

We are remembering the sacrifice

Memorial Day is a poignant reminder of the selfless service of countless individuals. As Jesus said, "Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends" (John 15:13, NKJV). This scripture encapsulates the spirit of sacrificial service that we honor today.

We acknowledge our nation's history

While we acknowledge that America has a not-so-nice history and we are still striving towards justice, it is important to recognize that many Americans from all walks of life have contributed to their lives through risking of their lives and that of their loved ones, prayer, and other personal sacrifices that we can only phantom,  allowing us to continue being free generations later. Those sacrifices enable us to voice our differences and work together to make improvements that change us as a nation for the better. Let us use this time to come together and share our common heritage. Because like any family, we are not perfect. As Jesus said, "A house divided against itself cannot stand" (Mark 3:25, NKJV).

We are celebrating and practicing mental health and reflection

As May is also Mental Health Awareness Month, it's essential to recognize the impact that reflection and remembrance can have on our mental well-being. Taking time to honor those who have sacrificed helps us connect with our history and our community, providing a sense of purpose and gratitude that can positively influence our mental health. Especially if you had a family member or someone close to you that served.

Embrace, celebrate, or create family traditions

Our family will commemorate Memorial Day with a quiet typical picnic on Memorial day with snacks, sandwiches and drinks protected from debris and bugs. A time to enjoy each other's company and reflect on the blessings we have because of those who came before us. We'll also revisit our genealogy, remembering our fathers and ancestors who contributed to our family's history and our nation's legacy.

We acknowledge the sacrifice

We acknowledge all the men and women who sacrificed their time and lives for our freedom. Their bravery and dedication allow us to live in "one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

The Importance of Honoring Veterans

As George Washington once said, "The willingness with which our young people are likely to serve in any war, no matter how justified, shall be directly proportional to how they perceive the veterans of earlier wars were treated and appreciated by their nation." This powerful reminder emphasizes the importance of how we treat our veterans and the impact it has on future generations.

Ways to remember those who sacrificed

We invite you, our readers, to join us in stopping, reflecting, and praying on this solemn day. Take a moment of silence with your families to honor those who have fallen. Here are some meaningful ways to engage:

  • Stop and Reflect: Take a few minutes to quietly reflect on the sacrifices made for our freedom.
  • Pray Together: Gather with your family to pray for those who are currently serving and for their families.
  • Observe Silence: Hold a moment of silence together.
  • Visit a Veteran: Spend time with a veteran as a family.
  • Write Thank-You Cards: Have your children write thank-you cards to veterans.
  • Contribute Financially: Donate to veterans' organizations.
  • Practice Gratitude: Each family member can share something they are grateful for, fostering a positive mental health practice.

Let us come together to remember and honor the sacrifices made for our freedom. May we never forget the price of liberty and always strive to live in a way that honors those who have served.  As John F. Kennedy once said, "Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country."
